Activities
There are plenty of activities in and around Masaka that we will be happy to discuss with you.
We can give you advice on the most appropriate transportation for each destination. Nabajuzzi Wetlands: A bio-diverse wetland that is ideal for spotting birds such as the Crested Crane, Ibis, Sunbird, Egret, and Marabou Stork. We can arrange a professional bird guide to accompany you. A 5-minute drive or a 40-minute walk through local villages from the Villa. Weaverbird Art Community: A community art center just outside the small, beautiful village of Nydegeya. The organization uses art to empower the community; the center has a sculpture park and hosts art events throughout the year. A 15-minute drive (7 km, 4 miles) from the Villa. Lake Nabugabu: The lake is home to a wide variety of Uganda’s bird species and is a pleasant location to hike or enjoy an afternoon at the shore. A 40-minute drive (20 km, 12 miles) from the Villa. Ssese Islands: If you’re looking for a place to slow it right down, Ssese’s lush archipelago of 84 islands along Lake Victoria’s northwestern shore boasts some stunning white-sand beaches. A 1-hour drive (39 km, 24 miles) to Bukatata on the shore of Lake Victoria, then a 30-minute ferry to the island. |
About Masaka
Masaka is the district headquarters of the Masaka District in Central Uganda.
Its population of just over 100,00 is spread out over the surrounding hillsides so the town center is relatively small and easy to explore. Though it was largely destroyed during the Uganda-Tanzania war of 1979 and the civil war ending in 1986, the town shows no sign of these past struggles and has been peaceful, friendly, and growing ever since. Masaka is located just 140 kilometers (87 miles) from Kampala and just 2.5-hour drive from the Entebbe International Airport (124 km, 77 miles). The shore of Lake Victoria is a short 1-hour drive (39 km, 24 miles) to Bukataka. Masaka sits at 1,200 meters (3,900 feet) so the climate is tropical but with relatively low humidity considering lies a short distance north of the equator (GPS 00°20’28” S, 31°44’10” E). Its temperatures vary little, the average year-round is 21°C (70°F) with highs of 27°C (80°F) September to May, and lows only down to 16°C (60°F) July to August. The driest month is July and the wettest is April; though pleasant intermittent rains can occur at any time of year. The tropical climate creates a lush & colorful landscape with green hillsides, flowering fruit trees, banana plantations, and abundant birds. |
